Services at Sue Pryor Swimming include:
Babies are special! We encourage baby to start their water experience from 3 months of age. They have not developed fear of the water, and have some innate behaviours that help us in teaching them to be safe and competent in the water.
You can help! Bath-time can be used to prepare your child for the ‘big pool’ experience. Start by tipping water from a cup over their head, then face. Use the words “Ready, set, go” each time, then pause before pouring so that the child knows what to expect. This “cueing” is the first thing your baby will be taught in their swimming lessons.
Up till 12 months of age babies will automatically close off their airways when under water, so are quite safe if submerged for short times, and they soon learn to hold their breath on their own. We do not force this activity, but carefully monitor the child’s reactions, and gradually take them under when they are comfortable (it’s usually the parents who are most nervous!!).
Our aim is to teach comfort and confidence in the water, and impart vital safety skills:
In our Baby swim program we use songs, games, splashing and kicking to make the experience fun with learning.
Spending a half hour in a warm pool, with your baby, without the distractions of phones or ‘jobs to do’, is a wonderful bonding time for you both - enjoy!

Young children benefit hugely from learning to swim, and as they learn to move about and become independent, then their safety near water becomes a vital consideration!
Our focus with children’s swimming is the development of comfort, balance and independence. Learning to respect the water, and to know their limitations—but no floaties! Floaties give a false sensation of buoyancy and safety and our goal is to build these skills through body awareness.
We also aim to teach your child to swim technically the best they can, but this takes time. Correct technique means that strokes are more efficient, and can be maintained longer in water emergencies. The slower that children learn, the longer they retain the skills gained, and confidence is gradually developed.
Confidence comes from caring teachers, a happy, safe environment, and from learning to balance on the front and back.

The four strokes and Safety themes:
We teach small progressions to build competence in the 4 recognised strokes; freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly, as well as safe water entry techniques, including diving.
As each child masters the steps in the swimming strokes we reward them for achievements in technique and, as they become more proficient, in distances swum.
Sue Pryor Swimming has a strong emphasis on teaching water safety. Children will be taught survival strokes, the use of survival aids, and the recognition of dangers and approaches to rescues.
